A shared sense of accomplishment
Summer’s here. Where’s the party?
For nearly two-dozen San Diego Education Fund Scholars, the end-of-school-year celebration was at Dave & Busters San Diego for games, a supersized buffet and the fellowship that comes with shared accomplishment.
The scholars included just-out-high-school students, others who had just graduated from universities and still others enjoying a well-deserved summer break between terms.
To check the boxes in a game of “People Bingo,” scholars mingled and chatted to learn things about one another. A puzzle game brought groups of scholars shoulder to shoulder in a race to fit the pieces together. A raffle sent some lucky winners home with gift cards.
Goodwill and mutual congratulations filled the banquet room. So did the dreams of future teachers, scientists, engineers, doctors and nurses.
Melissa Arguelles just completed her first year in social studies at San Diego State University. She is determined to funnel inspiration from her own teachers and a love of history into a career as a high school teacher.
“I just really want to help students get into college,” Melissa said.
