New scholars shine at ceremony

Four of San Diego Education Fund’s newest scholars took center stage May 6 during San Diego Unified School District’s Teacher of the Year ceremonies.

The students beamed as SDEF President Rebecca Philpott presented them with Certificates of Scholarship to recognize their outstanding academic achievements and commitment to excellence.

The lineup of students, their present school, future college and major included: Andrea Figueroa (San Diego School of Performing Arts, SDSU, liberal studies); Anthony Ghoussain (Canyon Hills High School, SDSU, electrical engineering); Camila Macedo (Crawford High School, UCSD, mechanical engineering), and Jenna Srey (Lincoln High School, SDSU, Biology).

Andrea earned a scholarship to train to become a teacher. Anthony, Camila and Jenna are studying to pursue careers in STEM.

During the ceremony, as a boisterous audience of teachers cheered their award-winning colleagues, the scholarship recipients looked toward their transition to college and beyond.

Where will it all lead for Camila, the inbound mechanical engineering student at UCSD?

“I’m hoping to build something that can benefit all of society,” she said.
